Hardware installers and initial site setup engineers responsible for HP c-Class BladeSystem hardware installation and initialization.

Course objectives
Students completing this course will be prepared to:

  • Identify the components of an HP c-Class BladeSystem and their function in the system
  • Locate detailed specifications and configuration tools for HP c-Class BladeSystems and their components online
  • Identify proper physical placement of a HP c-Class BladeSystem enclosure and rack related to power and cooling
  • Install all HP BladeSystem components properly and securely, observing safety regulations for personnel and equipment
  • Power up an HP BladeSystem and determine status of all components based on states of indicators and locally-accessed components such as the Insight Display
  • Perform initial configuration of HP c-Class BladeSystem components such as the enclosure name and network addressing for the Onboard Administrator and c-Class server blade iLOs locally using the Insight Display
  • Perform initial configuration of c-Class interconnects when locally connected to the interconnect itself
  • Configure/license advanced features for power and thermal management
  • Follow the procedure to update firmware in HP c-Class BladeSystem components

c-Class BladeSystem Overview

  • Identify c-Class BladeSystem hardware components by sight and function, including enclosures, blades, interconnects, power supplies and fans

c-Class BladeSystem Enclosures

  • Compare the features of different BladeSystem enclosures
  • Identify enclosure installation options
  • Locate power bays, fan bays, device bays and interconnect bays within different types of c-Class enclosures
  • Identify c-Class enclosure bay numbering
  • Identify mapping between c-Class blade bay ports and interconnect bay ports
  • Configure enclosures for full-height and half-height c-Class blades
  • Configure c-Class enclosures for double-width interconnect modules
  • Update enclosure-based firmware

c-Class Power and Cooling

  • Identify the differences between single-phase and three-phase enclosure power configurations
  • Configure power supply requirements based on blade power requirements and device bay population
  • Configure power supplies with and without redundancy
  • Correlate power supplies with device bay zones
  • Configure power supply behavior with Power Manager
  • Identify the features of different cooling technologies available for BladeSystems
  • Correlate cooling zones with device bay zones
  • List the features of Thermal Dynamics

c-Class Components Overview

  • Compare features of available c-Class server blades
  • Differentiate among different models of server blades by sight
  • Compare features of available c-Class storage blades, including disk blades and tape blades
  • Compare features of available c-Class interconnect modules, including Ethernet, fibre channel, virtual connect and pass-through modules
  • Identify the proper installation configuration of server blades and storage blades
  • Identify operational, selection and power status based on physical LED behaviors on different types of enclosure components
  • Update component-specific firmware

c-Class Physical Installation

  • Complete an enclosure diagram including the proper power and cooling required to support server and storage blades
  • Install a mezzanine card on a server blade
  • Install blades, power supplies, cooling fans and interconnects to conform to given customer and BladeSystem requirements
  • Correlate interconnect cable connectors to interconnect and server blade ports
  • Power up the enclosure and take appropriate reconfiguration actions based on LED behaviors on the enclosure and all components

The Insight Display

  • Access the Main Menu of the Insight Display on the physical enclosure
  • Identify enclosure aggregate status from the Insight Display
  • Configure initial enclosure configuration from the Insight Display
  • Perform initial network configuration to the Onboard Administrator and server blade iLOs from the Insight Display
  • Display status and initialization information about the enclosure and its components from the Insight Display
  • Identify enclosure uplink/downlink connections

The Onboard Administrator

  • Connect to the Onboard Administrator from a local/direct connection
  • Access administrative functions of the Onboard Administrator from the local/direct connection to perform initial configurations and display status and logs

Integrated Lights Out 2 (iLO 2)

  • Establish a local/direct connection to the iLO 2 of a server blade
  • Access the iLO 2 of a server blade from a local/direct connection as an administrator to perform initial configuration of the iLO for network access

Initializing Interconnects

  • Establish a local/direct connection to an interconnect Ethernet switch module and perform initial configuration
  • Establish a local/direct connection to a fibre channel switch module and perform initial configuration
  • Establish a local/direct connection to a virtual connect module and perform initial configuration

Installation Verification

  • From a network connection, verify that all network-accessible components of the enclosure can be reached
  • From a network connection, display status and configuration information for blades, fans, power supplies and logs from the Onboard Administrator and iLO 2
  • Perform firmware updates/upgrades
